Copley Square was named in honor of John Singleton Copley, the American painter, and is bordered by the Boston Public Library, Trinity Church, and Old South Church. Prior to 1883 it was known as Art Square due to its many cultural institutions, some of which remain today. It is a pending Boston Landmark.
